Language Access Plan

J - Training Staff on Policies and Procedures

The LAWG, in coordination with the LACs, will be responsible for developing an annual training for all EOIR employees on EOIR’s language access policies, plan, and procedures. The LAWG will develop training materials that will cover the nature and scope of language assistance services and the specific procedures through which each employee can access those services. As part of this training, the LAWG will work to create a language access issue tracking mechanism and train EOIR employees on the correct method to report any language access issues. Training will include, but is not limited to:

Identifying the language needs of a person with LEP. Working with an interpreter in person or on the phone. Translations. Accessing and providing language assistance services through multilingual employees, in-house interpreters/translators, or contracted personnel. Best practices for providing effective assistance to people with LEP.

EOIR will continue to require technical training for immigration court interpreters to maintain and improve their language and interpreting skills. EOIR may provide this training through an annual training conference which takes place either in person or remotely. The Chief of the Language Services Unit (LSU) will determine the schedule and content of any technical training. [12]
