Salary & Benefits

Salary

Positions within the U.S. Trustee Program (USTP) fall into one of three government pay systems: General Schedule, Administratively Determined, or Senior Executive Service.

General Schedule (GS): The majority of the USTP’s positions are covered under the General Schedule. The GS base salary is usually adjusted annually each January. In addition, most GS employees are entitled to locality pay, which is a geographic-based percentage rate that reflects pay levels for non-Federal workers in certain geographic areas.

GS Salary

Administratively Determined (AD): The AD pay plan is a component-specific compensation system established under authority of 28 U.S.C. § 587 and 5 U.S.C. § 301 and approved by the Attorney General. Within the USTP, it covers United States Trustee and Assistant United States Trustee positions in the field.

Senior Executive Service (SES): Certain leadership positions within the Executive Office for U.S. Trustees are classified in the SES. The Department of Justice has a certified SES performance appraisal system.

Benefits

As a component of the Department of Justice, USTP employees have access to a top-notch benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and life insurance; a comprehensive retirement plan; flexible spending accounts; a generous leave program; and programs aimed at enhancing work/life balance.

Insurance Coverage

Health: The Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program helps employees meet their health care needs by providing access to the widest selection of health plans in the country.

Dental and Vision: The Federal Employees Dental/Vision (FEDVIP) Program allows dental insurance and vision insurance to be purchased on a group basis, which means competitive premiums (withheld on a pre-tax basis) and no pre-existing condition limitations. FEDVIP coverage is on an enrollee-pay-all basis.

Life: The Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) provides term life insurance, which consists of Basic life insurance coverage and three forms of optional coverage. In most cases, new employees are automatically covered by Basic life insurance and premiums are deducted from their paychecks unless coverage is waived.

Long-term Care: The Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) helps pay the cost of care when an employee needs assistance with daily living or has a severe cognitive impairment. FLTCIP coverage is available on an enrollee-pay-all basis.

Savings

Thrift Savings Plan: The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a tax-deferred retirement savings and investment plan and is similar to a 401(k). By participating in the TSP, employees have the opportunity to save part of their income for retirement, receive matching agency contributions, and reduce their current taxes.

Flexible Spending Accounts: The Federal Flexible Spending Account Program (FSAFEDS) is a tax-favored program that allows you to pay for out-of-pocket health care and dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars.

Time-Off

Personal Leave Days: Employees can earn between 13 and 26 days of annual leave (depending on length of service) and 13 days of sick leave annually. In addition, there are several other leave programs, including military leave and time off for special circumstances, that offer employees additional flexibilities.

Paid Federal Holidays: There are 11 public holidays observed each year.

Work/Life Balance

Compressed Work Schedule (CWS) and Telework Options: Employees of the USTP may be eligible to participate in a CWS schedule and/or telework, which may help balance the demands of work with the demands of one’s personal life.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The EAP provides services designed to help employees, managers, and organizations meet life challenges and remain healthy, engaged, and productive.

Additional Benefits

Mentorship: New USTP employees are placed with a mentor to ensure a successful transition to their new position and to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the USTP’s mission and national priorities.

Continuing Education: The USTP offers a wide range of learning services with a focus on honing skills, enhancing relevant knowledge, and providing professional growth opportunities.

Student Loan Repayment Assistance: Eligible employees (both attorney and non-attorney) may apply for incentive program funding to help repay their federal student loans.
