Environmental Justice and Enforcement

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois enforces the nation’s environmental, health, and occupational safety laws. The Office partners with federal and state agencies, such as the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. To protect citizens and the environment the Office ensures its vigorous efforts are consistent with DOJ policy and the President’s climate priorities addressed in Executive Order 14008.

Disadvantaged communities are often disproportionately impacted by individual and corporate environmental offenders. In response, the Office has established a team of prosecutors and civil attorneys focused on environmental justice. The team enforces laws that prohibit illegal dumping, unsafe asbestos removal practices, and other laws that protect the quality of our air and water in the Southern District of Illinois.
