Undergrad Student Internships
The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York offers a number of summer undergraduate internships, and on a limited basis, year-round internships (volunteer-unpaid), in both our Brooklyn and Central Islip, New York offices. This is an excellent opportunity for college students studying pre-law, criminal justice, accounting, information technology, social work, or library management. Applicants must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university, graduate, or professional school. Descriptions of these specialized placements are listed below:
Accounting Assistant Internship:
This internship, geared toward students pursuing an accounting or business degree, offers an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful hands-on experience in a government accounting environment. Functions include assisting our Budget Analysts with expense and budget analysis, report preparation, accounts payable coordination, filing and other functions as assigned. Working knowledge of Excel is required.
Executive Media Internship:
This internship will offer support to the Public Information & Affairs team as well as the Executive team by engaging in high-level projects that drive many of the Office’s internal and external initiatives and programs. This includes compiling coverage roundups, clipping and transcribing interviews, drafting releases, tracking and monitoring news, and assisting with special assignments, community outreach and research as needed. This internship offers valuable hands-on experience for students interested in pursuing a career in public affairs, media, communications, and journalism, and provides an inside view into how government offices function. Computer and interpersonal skills are required.
Information Technology Internship:
This internship offers problem-solving and detail-oriented students currently pursuing a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related field, an opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting the technology systems that enable government attorneys and professional staff to carry out their mission. Interns will work alongside experienced IT professionals, develop technical skills, and learn about information technology in a secure federal environment.
Legal Library and Records Management Internship:
This internship offers practical librarianship and records management experience for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in pursuing careers within law libraries, federal libraries, or federal records centers. When assisting the library, students will learn the basics of conducting legal research and database navigation. When assisting the records department, students will learn the day-to-day operations of maintaining different documents and case lifecycles. Additionally, students will gain hands on experience cataloguing the library’s extensive collection, processing books, and distributing materials within the office.
Paralegal-Legal Studies Internship:
Students enrolled in legal studies, paralegal, or other pre-law programs are invited to apply for this internship. Interns accepted in this area will have the opportunity to work closely under the supervision of Litigation Professional Staff in the Civil and Criminal Divisions to assist on a range of projects which will include trial preparation, Freedom of Information Act responses, legal research and analysis, as well as the opportunity to observe court proceedings and trials. This internship offers an insightful view into the role of litigation professionals and federal prosecutors.
Victim and Witness Service Unit Internship:
The VWS Unit seeks motivated and compassionate students currently enrolled in social work, criminal justice, or legal studies programs, for a valuable internship experience. Interns will assist in providing critical support to victims of crime, ensuring they understand the criminal justice system while also helping with logistics and coordination related to victim and witness matters. Interns will work with VWS staff to arrange travel and logistics for witnesses scheduled to testify in court. This internship offers a unique perspective into the critical importance of supporting victims and witnesses through the judicial process.
All internships are in-person. Opportunities are generally located in our Brooklyn office with a limited number of opportunities available in our Central Islip, Long Island Office. Time commitment is 30 hours per week for a total of 8 weeks beginning June through August. All student applicants must be U.S. citizens and are required to complete a security application for clearance (which can take several weeks) prior to starting the internship. Applications should be submitted from December 1st through February 1stonly. If applying to multiple internships, make certain to add each internship you would like to be considered for. Students will be contacted by a supervisor from the area(s) they are interested in to schedule an interview. Schedules are flexible and determined by students and supervisors.
