U.S. Attorney's Office, Western District of Texas

SAN ANTONIO – An Air Force contractor was arrested in Comal County on Saturday on criminal charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents and possession of firearms on Joint Base San Antonio, announced U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas.

According to an indictment, in April 2025, Zachry Wade Carroll, 47, of San Antonio, allegedly lost a classified document relating to our national defense and failed to promptly report it to his superior officer.

The indictment also includes charges alleging that, in November 2025, Carroll knowingly possessed a loaded .380 caliber firearm on his person while working in a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) at Joint Base San Antonio – Kelly Annex. At the same time, he allegedly possessed a loaded AR-15 with 85 rounds of ammunition and three magazines and a loaded 9mm handgun with 20 rounds of ammunition and three magazines in his vehicle on the base. The indictment further alleges that, when asked if he was armed, Carroll denied having the unauthorized .380 on his person.

Carroll made his initial appearance in a federal court in San Antonio today and is charged with one count of losing national defense information, two counts of possession of a firearm in a federal facility, and one count of making false statements. If convicted on all counts, he faces up to 17 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The FBI and Air Force Office of Special Investigations are investigating the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mark Roomberg and Kirk Mangels are prosecuting the case.

An indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
