How To Pay Debts Owed To The United States

Civil Debts

Payments made towards civil debts may be sent to the Financial Litigation Unit. Bank checks, money orders and personal checks are accepted and should be made payable to the “Department of Justice” and mailed to the United States Attorney’s Office, Attn: FLU, 303 Marconi Blvd., Suite 200, Columbus, OH 43215.

Payments may also be made online at www.pay.gov which allows a debtor to make payments using their bank checking/saving account information or their credit card. Please contact the Financial Litigation Unit at (614) 469-5715 prior to using this website to ensure that the correct reference number is used for the case.

FedWire Transfers

Payments on certain civil debts may also be made by wire transfer. Environmental Protection Agency superfund payments of $10,000 or more and payments of $50,000 or more for all other agencies may be made by wire transfer. Please note that Debtors are responsible for any FedWire costs associated with the transaction.

Debtors seeking to use wire transfers must contact the Financial Litigation Unit (FLU) at (614) 469-5715. Once it has been verified that the debt meets the criteria for a FedWire transfer, The FLU will send the debtor or their designee instructions on how to complete the FedWire transfer.

Criminal Debts

All special assessments, fines and restitution payments are received and processed by the United States District Court's Clerk's Office. The Clerk's Office maintains the official docket of the case and issues copies of receipts to the debtor and the United States Attorney's Office. Checks should be made payable to the "Clerk, United States District Court" and should also reference the docket number assigned to the case. The Clerk's Office also accepts electronic funds transfers. Debtors should contact FLU to confirm current balances before making final payment on any criminal debts.
