Assistance and Referrals

LEGAL ASSISTANCE & ATTORNEY REFERRALS

The U.S. Attorney’s Office receives inquiries and requests for legal advice that our office cannot provide.  We lack the resources and authority to represent individuals or to provide legal advice or opinions to private citizens.  WE CANNOT REPRESENT YOU AS YOUR ATTORNEY.  Here is a non-exhaustive list of South Carolina organizations that may be able to assist you:

South Carolina Bar Lawyer Referral Service.  The Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) is a public service of the South Carolina Bar that provides referrals to individuals needing qualified, prescreened lawyers.  Website: https://www.scbar.org/public/get-legal-help/find-lawyer-or-mediator/find-a-lawyer/.  Tele: 1-800-868-2284.

South Carolina Appleseed Legal Justice Center (Appleseed).  Per its website, Appleseed is a forceful and respected advocate for low-income South Carolinians on issues such as health care, immigration, reentry issues, housing, education, hunger, public benefits, domestic violence, and consumer issues.  Website: https://www.scjustice.org/who-we-are/. South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS).  Per its website, SCLS provides free legal services in a wide variety of civil (non-criminal) legal matters to eligible low-income residents of South Carolina.  SCLS is a non-profit corporation, funded by grants from the federally funded Legal Services Corporation, the South Carolina Bar Foundation, local United Ways, state court filing fees, and other federal, state, and local funding.  Website http://www.sclegal.org/; tele: 1-888-346-5592.

Protection and Advocacy (P&A).  Per its website, SC P&A, investigates reports of abuse and neglect and advocates for disability rights in areas such as health care, education, employment, and housing.  P&A serves people of all ages and disabilities. ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) South Carolina.  Website: https://www.aclusc.org/.

Family Justice Center of Georgetown and Horry Counties.  Per its website, this is a 501(c)(3)    collaboration of community partners and agencies working together to provide a safe and welcoming environment for the victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.   Website: http://www.fjcgtownhorry.org/.  Email: info@fjcgtownhorry.org.

Low Country Legal Volunteers (Beaufort, Hampton, and Jasper counties).   Per its website, this entity provides free, critical legal services and education through community volunteers and retired lawyers to low income individuals and families in these areas.  Website: http://www.lowcountrylegalvolunteers.org/

Legal Assistance for Seniors, SC Lieutenant Governor’s Office on Aging.  Per its website, Under Title III-B of the Older Americans Act mandates, the Lieutenant Governor’s Office on Aging funds the provision of legal assistance through the various Area Agencies on Aging throughout the state. Legal assistance means legal advice and representation. In South Carolina, that assistance must be provided by an attorney.  Website: https://aging.sc.gov/programs-initiatives/legal-assistance-seniors.

Veterans/Lawyers 4 Vets.  This is partnership with SC Appleseed, the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center and local attorneys, SC Appleseed is proud to provide, Lawyers 4 Vets, a pro bono legal clinic for lower-income Veterans in South Carolina.  Website:  https://www.scjustice.org/veterans-day-lawyers-4-vets-recap/.

SOUTH CAROLINA BAR – COMMON LEGAL TOPICS
