Attorney General Merrick Garland Visit to Rhode Island

United States Attorney General Merrick B. Garland met today with United States Attorney Zachary A Cunha and the leadership of local, state, and federal law enforcement in Rhode Island today, including the Office's Project Safe Neighborhoods law enforcement partners, to discuss successes and to further strategies that statistics show are reducing violent crime and removing firearms from the streets in communities across the state and the nation.

In prepared remarks, Attorney General Garland underscored the core mission of the Department of Justice: to uphold the rule of law, to keep our communities safe, and to protect civil rights, while reinforcing the Justice Department's commitment to provide law enforcement and community partners with the resources they need to protect their communities.

In welcoming Attorney General Garland, United States Attorney Cunha highlighted the close collaboration among law enforcement in Rhode Island in so many critical areas relative to public safety. Mr. Cunha highlighted the use of federal law enforcement intelligence to drive investigations and prosecutions of many of the things that touch the lives of every-day Rhode Islanders, including fentanyl, gun crimes, elder fraud and romance scams, as well as targeting corporate crime with the hope that holding those accountable will change behavior both locally and across the country.
