Victim Witness Intern Program

The Victim Witness Unit at the United States Attorney’s Office accepts graduate and undergraduate students studying in the fields of social work or criminal justice. Students must be willing to conduct a (minimum) two semester internship.

The internship allows a student to become familiar with the workings of the federal justice system and investigative process. Interns provide direct assistance to victims of crime, providing direct emotional support as well as written notifications of case events. Interns are exposed to a wide variety of training opportunities and workshops, and may also be involved in the planning and coordination of these events.

Eligibility

A. Interns must be currently enrolled at a four-year college or university.

B. Interns must be participating in an internship program through their school.

C. Intern should have some prior course work or experience in the area of criminal justice, psychology, or sociology.

D. Interns must agree to maintain the rules of strictest confidentiality and abide with the guidelines of the Internship Program and the Department of Justice. Failure to do so will result in immediate dismissal from the program.

E. Interns will receive no monetary compensation, but will earn college credit for their participation in the program.

F. Work will take place during the regular work hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) Business attire is required.

G. Interns will work between 6 and 40 hours per week, as determined by their school field liaison.

H. Interns must establish written goals and objectives to be accomplished through the course of their internship program.

I. In addition, interns must be eligible to participate in this program, according to the standards set forth by the Department of Justice, which includes a satisfactorily passing a background investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
