U.S. Marshals Service Director's Award Ceremony
The family of Court Security Officer Stanley Cooper accepting the Fallen Hero Award and a U.S. Marshals Service Purple Heart Award posing with Attorney General Holder and Director Clark. Court security officer Stanley W. Cooper, 72, died from gunshot wounds in January 2010 suffered in defending a security checkpoint in a Las Vegas federal building. Officer Cooper had been a federally deputized court security officer for 15 years. Before that he was with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department for 26 years and retired as a sergeant.

Attorney General Holder addressing the audience. This has been quite a year for the U.S. Marshals. Your work has enhanced one of our nation's oldest, and most impressive, traditions of service. You've assessed potential security threats and planned and provided security for terrorist detainee trials. You've ensured the safety of health care providers and enforced the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. You've seized and managed the assets of Bernard Madoff, Allen Stanford and others engaged in financial fraud. And then you've sold off those properties to benefit the victims of their crimes.

Joel Kirch, the chief inspector of the U.S. Marshals' Technical Operations Group, the modern day version of trackers was honored for pulling those trackers into the 21st century. The TOG has a cadre of deputies specializing in technology who under the leadership of Kirch have moved to the forefront of both the Marshals Service and of federal law enforcement.
