Richard G. Kleindienst was the 10th Deputy Attorney General of the United States. He served as the Department’s second-ranking official from January 1969 to June 1972.

At the time of his nomination for the post of Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Kleindienst was a senior partner in the Phoenix law firm of Shimmel, Hill, Kleindienst and Bishop, which he joined in 1958. He had previously served as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives (1953 to 1954), where he was the youngest member of that body. Mr. Kleindienst was keenly active in Republican national and state level associations, campaigns, and committees.

A native of Arizona, Mr. Kleindienst served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1946. He attained his A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1947 and his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1950.
