Laurence H. Silberman was the 14th Deputy Attorney General of the United States. He served as the Department’s second-ranking official from March 1974 to April 1975.

At the time of his nomination for the post of Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Silberman was a partner in the Washington law firm of Steptoe & Johnson. He had formerly served as Under Secretary of Labor from 1970 to 1973, and as Solicitor of the Department of Labor from 1969 to 1970.  

Mr. Silberman engaged in the private practice of law in Honolulu, Hawaii from 1961 to 1967, during which time he taught briefly at University of Hawaii Law School.

A native of York, Pennsylvania, Mr. Silberman received his A.B. in history from Dartmouth College in 1957 and his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1961. He served briefly on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1958, and then several additional years in the U.S. Army Reserve.
