Sri Lanka: ICITAP-Supported Sri Lankan Police Official Selected for U.S. Leadership Training in Reno, Nevada

On May 23, the ICITAP-Sri Lanka’s Law Enforcement Assistance Attaché reported that a Sri Lankan police officer had been selected to received leadership training in the United States. During January and February 2023, ICITAP representatives worked with Inspector General of Police and the U.S. Embassy Colombo Public Affairs Section to complete the selection and nomination process for a Sri Lankan police officer to apply to attend the prestigious, John McCain Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders on the Rule of Law and Public Service at the University of Nevada, Reno. This program will be held during late June to August 2023, and the purpose of the program is to provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills.  Each SUSI has 20 participants.  SUSIs consist of a four-week academic residency with a balanced series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures.  Site visits, leadership development, cultural activities, and community service complement the coursework and academic sessions.  If conditions allow, the SUSI will include a one-week integrated study tour in the United States. A Sri Lankan Police Sub-Inspector was nominated to attend the program by the Inspector General after competing in an interview process for selection. The Sub-Inspector’s application to attend the program was recently accepted and confirmed by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) after a thorough review of candidates from ten (10) other countries.. In Sri Lanka, ICITAP works with the support of and in coordination with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
