Somalia: ICITAP Provides Latent Fingerprint Training to the Forensic Sciences Lab

On August 5, the ICITAP-Somalia mission reported that, during the week of August 2, the newly arrived ICITAP Latent Print (LP) mentor provided training on the dusting for and lifting of latent fingerprints. Additionally, the mentor provided expert instruction on the proper methodology to fill out and maintain official print cards. During the week, the mentor scaled the training and advisement to higher levels as the team was instructed on the use of chemical print lifting and “sticky side powder processing.”  In addition, the FSL was provided with instruction on the use of a “Superglue Chamber.” The chamber was provided to the FSL by ICITAP-Somalia with funding from the Department of Justice (DoJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This instruction and advisement were a major step forward for the FSL in providing a sustainable capacity to the Somali Police Force (SPF) in the conduct of high-profile forensic examinations in the very near future. In Somalia, ICITAP works with the support of the DOS Bureau of Counterterrorism and the FBI.
