Somalia: ICITAP-mentored Joint Investigation Team Receives Training on Digital Evidence Interpretation

On January 2, the ICITAP-mentored Joint Investigative Team (JIT) received training on the proper use of digital evidence to support substantive investigative matters. ICITAP-Somalia advisors identified a skills and knowledge gap in investigator’s ability to exploit mobile phone data derived during counterterrorism investigations.  Advisors developed and delivered the training in conjunction with JIT Train-the-Trainer (T3) participants.  This training provided a sustainable core competency needed for the team to investigate complex counterterrorism investigations using digital media as a tool. Over the coming months, additional training will be delivered to JIT investigators on digital media exploitation to support counterterrorism investigations. T3 participants, overseen by the JIT advisors, will continue to develop their skills as future trainers for the JIT.  The T3 participants will continue to design and deliver quality training that will maintain professionalism and enhance the operational capability of the unit. In Somalia, ICITAP works with the support of the Department of State Bureau of Counterterrorism and the FBI.
