Colombia: ICITAP Delivers Training on Management of Commingled Human Remains

From November 29 to 30, ICITAP provided virtual training to 43 forensic specialists from the Colombia Attorney General’s Office (AGO) Human Identification laboratories of the Technical Investigation Corps and to Colombia National Police forensic laboratory personnel in the “Management of Commingled Human Remains.” The training was provided by a renowned forensic anthropologist and professor from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. A follow-up virtual session is scheduled for January 31, 2022, and in February 2022, this same forensic anthropologist will conduct the practical phase of the training at the AGO laboratories in Bogota and Medellin, Colombia. Participants will continue to share concepts and field techniques on forensic archaeology, protocols, standard operating procedures, and the analysis of cases that result from clandestine burials and mass grave exhumations, which consists of reintegrating parts of skeletal human remains to restore identity of many of the victims of the recent armed conflict. In Colombia, ICITAP works the support of and in coordination with the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
