Maggie Goodlander

Maggie Goodlander was a Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice where she oversaw the international, appellate, and policy work of the Antitrust Division.  Prior to her appointment in September 2022, Maggie served as Counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland and advised the Attorney General on a wide range of legal, policy, and management matters, including antitrust enforcement, consumer protection, and the development and execution of the Justice Department’s $35.3 billion budget.  In addition, she helped launch two new components within the Justice Department: the Office for Access to Justice and the Office for Environmental Justice.

Before joining the Department of Justice in January 2021, Maggie taught constitutional law and administrative law at the University of New Hampshire School of Law.  Over the past decade, she has worked in each branch of the United States government and in both houses of Congress, including as a law clerk to both U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and then-Chief Judge Merrick Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit; as counsel to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee; as a senior advisor to U.S. Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman; and as an intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve.  Born and raised in Nashua, New Hampshire, Maggie is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School.
