This map shows the geographic areas covered by metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties in the United States. All the states have varying mixtures of metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties. States with the highest shares of their geographic area covered by metropolitan counties include California, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island. In most states, the geographic area consists predominantly of rural counties.
