Philip Nelson Biography
Philip Nelson is a principal at Economists Incorporated, an economic consulting firm. Previously, he was Assistant Director for Competition Analysis at the FTC and an adjunct professor at Fordham Law School.
Dr. Nelson has written numerous articles and two books, Corporations in Crisis: Behavioral Observations for Bankruptcy Policy and U.S. International Competitiveness. He also edited the ABA Antitrust Sectionç´ Market Power Handbook: Competition Law and Economic Foundations.
After joining Economists Incorporated, Dr. Nelson played a major role in matters involving mergers, price fixing, vertical restraints, Robinson-Patman Act, unfair competition, intellectual property, class certification, and damage issues. He has provided testimony and affidavits on antitrust, intellectual property, class certification, and damages issues. Among the industries he has analyzed are: oil, gas, minerals, refineries, pipelines, oil field equipment, defense, retailing, grocery products, vehicles, pharmaceuticals, toys, electrical equipment, machine tools, plastics, chemicals, securities, telecommunications, electrical utilities, insurance, cameras, computer hardware and software, integrated circuits, cable television, newspapers, securities, and health-care technologies and services.
During his career, he has worked on some of the largest antitrust matters. Among the mergers in which he has been involved are: Exxon/Mobil, Ciba Geigy/Sandoz (to form Novartis), Alcoa/Reynolds, Lockheed/Martin Marietta, Maytag/Whirlpool, El Paso/Coastal, Mattel/Tyco, NYSE/Archipelago, and GM/Toyota Joint Venture. Dr. Nelson has also been involved in major private antitrust litigations, including matters such as In re Brandname Prescriptions Drugs, the recent vitamins collusion cases, and W.H. Hunt, et al. v. Bankers Trust Co. et al.
He has served as chair of the ABA Antitrust Sectionç´ Economics Committee and as vice chair of the Sectionç´ Intellectual Property Committee. He is currently vice chair of the Sectionç´ Health Care and Pharmaceuticals Committee.
Dr. Nelson received his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University and his bachelors degree in Mathematics and the Social Sciences from Dartmouth College.
