Since firefighters and police officers start at below average wages and actually continue to earn less than their services are worth, the pension plan (to which they contribute) is considered a benefit in lieu of reasonable compensation and, as such, should be calculated as part of their earnings rather than deducted as money awarded. This calculation should extend to current actuarial estimates of life span barring homicide or accidental death.
