9/11 Victims Compensation
I feel strongly that the charitable contributions received by the families
of victims should not be consider a "collateral source" in the distribution
of federal aid. I think that I speak for many Americans when I say that
the intent of our donations was not just to make the families "whole".
Given the senseless loss of their loved ones nothing could ever make them
whole, emotionally or financially, but our hope was to make their lives
easier by providing some financial security. The combination of charitable
aid and federal aid should do more than just cover their expenses and make
up for lost wages, etc - it should provide an additional cushion that
removes some of the day-to-day worries about finances which are normally
borne by both parents.
Sincerely,
