LOGAN COUNTY MAN SENTENCED TO NINE YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ILLEGAL FIREARM POSSESSION
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin today announced that a Logan County man was sentenced to nine years in prison for illegal possession of a firearm. Gregory Bruce Adkins, 54, of Chapmanville, Logan County, W.Va., previously pleaded guilty in June 2011.
On November 12, 2010, during an argument with his wife, Adkins’ kidnapped his wife from their home in Chapmanville, threatened to kill her with a RPB M-10 9-millimeter pistol which he had converted to a fully automatic firearm, and drove her to Cora, W.Va. Adkins was eventually stopped by members of the West Virginia State Police in Logan County and arrested. At the time of the arrest, police recovered the RPB M-10 9-millimeter pistol from Adkins’ vehicle. Adkins admitted that he had converted the pistol to a fully automatic firearm. Law enforcement conducted a test fire of the pistol and determined that it functioned as a fully automatic firearm. Also, the 9-millimeter pistol was not registered to the defendant according to the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
The investigation was conducted by the West Virginia State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Monica D. Coleman handled the prosecution. The sentence was imposed by United States District John T. Copenhaver, Jr.
This case is also being brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods. Project Safe Neighborhoods is a nationwide commitment to reduce gun crime in the United States by networking existing local programs targeting gun crime.
