BOONE COUNTY MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON ON OXYCODONE DISTRIBUTION CHARGE
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – James B. Mangus, 31, of Madison, Boone County, West Virginia, was sentenced today to one year and one day in prison by United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. for conspiracy to distribute oxycodone. The defendant pleaded guilty in June. Mangus admitted that during the winter months of 2007, he began obtaining OxyContin pills from various sources. Mangus further admitted that between the winter of 2007 and May 2009, he obtained at least 640 80-milligram OxyContin pills for his personal use and also distributed a portion in the Boone County area. On July 8, 2008, the defendant sold four 80-milligram OxyContin pills to a confidential informant working with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. Also, on July 30, 2008, the defendant sold three 80-milligram Oxycontin pills to an informant at the Exxon gas station located in Danville, Boone County. Mangus admitted that he possessed additional quantities of pills at the time of both July 2008 drug transactions.
This case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorney John Frail handled the prosecution.
This case was prosecuted as part of an ongoing effort led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, joined by various federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, remain committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers in communities across the Southern District.
