OHIO MAN SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR CRACK COCAINE POSSESSION

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin announced that an Ohio man was sentenced to three years and one month in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine.  Danny Merriweather, Jr., 25, of Toledo, Ohio, previously pleaded guilty in July.  Merriweather admitted that on July 7, 2011, he placed a plastic bag containing crack cocaine in his mouth and attempted to swallow it just as law enforcement agents approached his Huntington residence.  Officers were visiting the defendant’s residence as part of a follow-up investigation when they found Merriweather in possession of the crack cocaine.  Law enforcement officers were able to retrieve the 13.8 grams of crack cocaine from the defendant.

The Court ordered the defendant to serve the prison sentence consecutive to a four-year prison sentence he is currently serving in Ohio for an unrelated drug conviction.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Huntington Police Department conducted the investigation.  Assistant United States Attorney Joseph F. Adams handled the prosecution.
