SOUTH CHARLESTON COUPLE PLEAD GUILTY TO CRACK COCAINE DISTRIBUTION
Defendant Admits to Selling Crack Cocaine While on CAMC Memorial’s Property
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A South Charleston couple pleaded guilty today in federal court before United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. to distribution of crack cocaine. Darrell Emmett Spencer, 42, along with his wife and co-defendant Leslie Yvonne Carter, 39, admitted that on August 18, 2011, they worked together to sell a quantity of crack cocaine to a confidential informant working with the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT). Carter further admitted that she directed the informant to meet her co-defendant at a predetermined location in Charleston. Spencer admitted that at the time, he met with and entered the informant’s vehicle at the location and subsequently gave the informant a quantity of crack cocaine. Spencer further admitted that he accepted $180 in exchange for the crack cocaine.
Carter also admitted to selling crack cocaine to an informant on six other occasions in August 2011.
Carter further admitted that she met the confidential informant at various locations in and around Charleston to complete illegal drug transactions, including Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Memorial Hospital in Kanawha City. Carter was employed at a physician’s office at CAMC at the time the drug transactions occurred.
Spencer also admitted that on August 1, 2011, he sold crack cocaine to a confidential informant working at the direction of MDENT. The transaction took place at his residence in South Charleston.
Spencer and Carter each face up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine when they are sentenced on August 13, 2012.
The Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT) conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Monica D. Coleman is in charge of the prosecution.
