CHARLESTON MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON ON FEDERAL DRUG CHARGES

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Lamont Honeycutt, 40, of Charleston, was sentenced today to 42 months in prison by United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston for aiding and abetting the possession with intent to distribute a quantity of marijuana for remuneration.  On April 23, 2009, Metro Drug Unit officers observed a vehicle driven by the defendant, make a turn onto Reynolds Street in front of the Greyhound bus terminal, without using a turning signal.  A short time later, an officer observed a known individual exit the bus terminal, pulling a piece of luggage on wheels.  The known individual placed the luggage in the backseat of the defendant’s vehicle and the two individuals departed the bus terminal.  A few blocks away from the bus station, a uniformed officer pulled the defendant’s vehicle over for the previous traffic violation.  During the traffic stop, an officer detected the smell of marijuana emanating from inside of the defendant’s vehicle and subsequently removed the item of luggage from the vehicle.  A narcotics canine performed an exterior search of the luggage and alerted officers to the presence of narcotics.   As a result of the investigation, officers recovered seven vacuum sealed bundles of suspected marijuana.  The marijuana seized was later analyzed at the drug identification section at the West Virginia State Police and was determined to contain marijuana weighing approximately 18.3 pounds.  Honeycutt admitted to aiding and abetting the known individual’s possession of the marijuana recovered in the luggage and knew that the narcotics were intended to be distributed in West Virginia in exchange for United States currency.

The Metro Drug Unit conducted the investigation.  Assistant United States Attorney Steven Loew handled the prosecution.
