BECKLEY FEDERAL INMATE SENTENCED ON ILLEGAL WEAPONS POSSESSION CHARGE

BECKLEY, W.Va. – Federal Correctional Institution at Beckley inmate John Oliver, 54, was sentenced today to 18 months in prison by United States District Judge Irene C. Berger for possession of a weapon inside a federal prison.  Oliver pleaded guilty in December to the charge.  Oliver admitted that on April, 25, 2010, while incarcerated at FCI Beckley, he possessed a metal rod with a sharpened point and a handle, commonly referred to as a “shank.”

Oliver is currently serving a 294-month prison sentence for various firearms-related offenses.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons conducted the investigation.  Assistant United States Attorney John File handled the prosecution.
