BECKLEY FEDERAL INMATE SENTENCED 96 MONTHS IN PRISON ON ASSAULT CHARGES

BECKLEY, W.Va. – A federal inmate was sentenced today to 96 months in prison by United States District Judge Irene C. Berger for two felony assaults.  Sylvester Cuevas, 36, admitted that on April 12, 2010, he repeatedly punched a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution in Beckley, causing the officer to sustain a broken nose and facial cuts.  At the time, the defendant was serving a sentence at the correctional facility for mailing threatening communications.  Cuevas further admitted that on August 23, 2010, he punched a correctional officer at the Southern Regional Jail located in Raleigh County, West Virginia, causing the officer to suffer a broken facial bone. 

The Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney John File handled the prosecution.
