CHARLESTON MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON ON ILLEGAL FIREARM POSSESSION CHARGE
CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Monyea Gravely, 21, of Charleston, was sentenced today to 24 months in prison by United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Gravely pleaded guilty in September to a single-count indictment. The defendant admitted that on August 18, 2010, he knowingly possessed a stolen and loaded Smith and Wesson .40-caliber firearm. The firearm was subsequently seized by law enforcement officers with the Charleston Police Department.
Gravely was prohibited from possessing a firearm by virtue of his February 2010 felony conviction in the Circuit Court of Kanawha County for possession with intent to deliver controlled substances.
This case was investigated by the Charleston Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Hunter Smith handled the prosecution.
