Inmate Enters Plea and is Sentenced on Escape Charge

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — A 35-year old Federal inmate entered a plea of guilty and was sentenced on September 13, 2012, in United States District Court in Clarksburg before Judge Irene M. Keeley.

United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced that: DAVID VAN SMITH a/k/a DAVID VAN APPLEWHITE entered a plea of guilty to Escape on June 29, 2012, when SMITH escaped from the custody of the Bureau of Prisons while serving a 100-month prison sentence for the distribution of crack cocaine. SMITH was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day imprisonment to be served consecutively to his current 100-month sentence.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brandon S. Flower and investigated by the United States Marshals Service.
