Glen Dale Resident Arrested on Firearms Charges

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA - A 49-year old Glen Dale, West Virginia resident was arrested today by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) pursuant to an indictment returned by a Federal Grand Jury last week.

According to United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, JOHN CHARLES MYERS has been charged with “Possession of a Firearm while Under a Domestic Violence Protection Order” and with “False Statement in the Acquisition of a Firearm.”

The indictment alleges that MYERS possessed a Taurus 9mm pistol on or about April 8, 2012, in Glen Dale despite being subject to a domestic violence protective order that was issued in 2011 by the Family Court of Ohio County, West Virginia. The indictment further alleges that MYERS made a false and fictitious written statement to Cabela’s, a federally licensed firearms dealer, by indicating that he was not subject to the protective order when he purchased the Taurus pistol in March of 2012.

MYERS appeared in court this afternoon for an initial appearance and was released with conditions.

MYERS faces 10 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 on each count.

The case will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David J. Perri and was investigated by the ATF and the Glen Dale Police Department.

The charge contained in the indictment is merely an accusation and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
