Philippi Resident Sentenced on Tampering Charge

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA - A35 year old Philippi, West Virginia, resident was sentenced on August 19, 2011, in United States District Court in Clarksburg by Judge Irene M. Keeley.

United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced that JASON MARTENY was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day imprisonment to be followed by three years of supervised release. MARTENY entered a plea of guilty on April 13, 2011, to one count of tampering with evidence on December 1, 2010, in Morgantown, West Virginia, by physically destroying his laptop computer in order to prevent federal agents from using electronic evidence contained on the computer to substantiate a federal criminal charge against him. MARTENY, who is free on bond, will self-report to the designated Federal institution.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David J. Perri and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Postal Inspection Service.
