USP Hazelton Inmate and an Employee Enter
Pleas of Guilty and are Sentenced

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA - A 34 year old inmate at the United States Penitentiary in Hazelton, West Virginia, entered a plea of guilty and was sentenced on October 25, 2010, in United States District Court in Clarksburg by Judge Irene M. Keeley and a 43-year old Fairmont, West Virginia, resident entered a plea of guilty and was sentenced on October 27, 2010, in United States District Court in Clarksburg by Magistrate Judge John S. Kaull.

United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced that:

MICHAEL DELEON, an inmate at USP Hazelton, entered a plea of guilty to one count of aiding and abetting the assault of another inmate with a dangerous weapon on February 22, 2010. DELEON and another inmate stabbed the victim 18 times with two prison-made weapons (shanks), resulting in superficial wounds in multiple locations. DELEON was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment on this charge, which he will begin serving when he completes the 63 month sentence he is currently serving.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brandon S. Flower and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Investigative Services at FCI Hazelton.

REBECCA SMITH of Fairmont, West Virginia, who was employed as a nurse at USP Hazelton, entered a plea of guilty to one count of providing a prohibited object (tobacco) to an inmate. SMITH was sentenced to 2 years probation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Zelda E. Wesley and was investigated by the Office of Inspector General.
