FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA — Betsy C. Jividen was sworn in today (April 26, 2010) as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia by Chief Judge John Preston Bailey. United States Attorney Jividen took her Oath of Office in United States District Court in Wheeling.

United States Attorney Jividen has been serving as the Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia since September 26, 2009, under the authority of the Vacancy Reform Act. On Friday, April 23, 2010, Attorney General Eric Holder appointed Jividen to fill the vacant United States Attorney position for the district until a Presidentially appointed United States Attorney assumes the office. Her elevation to the chief federal law enforcement officer comes after her service as the Acting United States Attorney and First Assistant United States Attorney. USA Jividen holds the distinction of being the longest serving Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of West Virginia, having been in the office for almost 30 years. She was, in fact, the first woman to ever be appointed to the position of an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of West Virginia. In addition to serving as the Acting United States Attorney and First Assistant, USA Jividen has held the positions of Civil Chief, Senior Litigation Counsel, and First Assistant under prior administrations. She has enjoyed lengthy service in both the Criminal and Civil Divisions of the office. She has served as an adjunct professor at the West Virginia University College of Law and was recently recognized by the National Association of Former United States Attorneys for her exceptional service to the United States Attorney’s Office, the Department of Justice, and the United States of America.

A graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law and the University of Wisconsin, USA Jividen resides in Wheeling with her husband, David, and their four children.
