Berkeley Springs Resident Entered
Guilty Plea to Filing a False Tax Return
MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — A 40 year old Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, resident entered a plea of guilty on September 17, 2009, in United States District Court in Martinsburg before Magistrate Judge David J. Joel.
United States Attorney Sharon L. Potter announced that XI HONG entered a plea of guilty to one count of an Indictment charging her with filing a false tax return for the tax year 2003 when she reported her taxable income to be $10,299 for that year, when in fact she was under-reporting her taxable income by $80,111.30.
HONG, who is currently free on bond pending sentencing, faces a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Michael D. Stein and Erin K. Reisenweber. The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division.
