Shinnston Resident Sentenced on Tax Violation

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — A 64 year old Shinnston, West Virginia, resident was sentenced on May 14, 2009, in United States District Court in Clarksburg by Judge Irene M. Keeley.

United States Attorney Sharon L. Potter announced that JOHN MICHAEL HARNETT was sentenced to 60 days imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of $100,000. HARNETT entered a plea of guilty in January 2009 to an Information charging him with attempting to evade the payment of trust fund tax liabilities in the amount of $173,578.25 from July 10, 2003, to January 8, 2008.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn Angus Morgan. The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division.
