United States Attorney Collects $16 Million

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia collected $16 million in Fiscal Year 2008, according to United States Attorney Sharon L. Potter.

Statistics released by USA Potter indicate that the $16 million total reflects collections primarily from affirmative civil enforcement cases, including recoveries in health care fraud and environmental protection matters; criminal fines; restitution; and assessments. The total includes $2.19 million in asset forfeitures, representing cash, vehicles and real estate.

The total also includes recoveries from defaulted government loans collected on behalf of government agencies including the Department of Education, Department of Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development, Federal Communications Commission, and the Federal Emergency Management Administration.

“The money collected in Fiscal Year 2008 accounts for more than three times of the entire budget of the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia, which is certainly welcome news for taxpayers, since these collections pay for our operation,” stated USA Potter.
