Former Financial Secretary of Steelworkers Local 5724
Pled Guilty to Embezzlement of Union Funds

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA — A Proctor, West Virginia, resident entered a plea of guilty on January 22, 2009, in United States District Court in Wheeling before Judge Frederick P. Stamp, Jr.

United States Attorney Sharon L. Potter announced that STEPHEN SNYDER entered a plea of guilty to one count of embezzlement from February of 2005 through August of 2006. SNYDER, who was the Financial Secretary of USW, Local 5724, Clarington, Ohio, engaged in a scheme to defraud and embezzle approximately $78,893.47 from the Local 5724 Strike Assistance Benefits to his personal bank account and for his personal benefit.

SNYDER, who is free on bond, faces a maximum exposure of five years imprisonment and a fine of $10,000.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Randolph J. Bernard. The case was investigated by the United States Department of Labor, Office of Labor Management Standards, Cleveland Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
