James L. Santelle, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced today that a federal grand jury has returned a three-count indictment against Clifton Kaquatosh (age: 30), charging him with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and theft occurring on the Menominee Indian Reservation. The assault offenses each have a maximum penalty upon conviction of 10 years imprisonment and / or $250,000 fine. The theft offense has a maximum penalty upon conviction of five years imprisonment and / or a $250,000 fine.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the case, on April 21, 2011, Kaquatosh struck a woman multiple times in the face and also held a knife to her neck threatening to kill her. The complaint also alleges that Kaquatosh later strangled her as she was attempting to flee and that Kaquatosh then fled in her vehicle.

The case was investigated by the Menominee Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney William Roach of the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Green Bay Division.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
