SARAVOUTH SUN, 28, of Everett, Washington, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 84 months in prison and three years of supervised release for Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Distribution of Methamphetamine, and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Offense. On the latter charge, he received a 60 month mandatory minimum consecutive sentence to a 24 month term on the first two counts of conviction. The U.S. Attorney’s Office had recommended a prison term of 106 months.

SUN was arrested March 3, 2009, in Mount Vernon, Washington, following a traffic stop by a Skagit County Sheriff’s Deputy. SUN was stopped because of an active warrant from the Washington State Department of Corrections. At sentencing Chief U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik told him that the sentence could have been much harsher, pointing to his extensive and violent criminal history. The judge also reminded SUN that he had been a dangerous thorn in the side of local law enforcement in Snohomish and Skagit Counties for many years.

According to records filed in the case, SUN has a 2000 conviction in Snohomish County for residential Burglary with a Deadly Weapon (Firearm), and a 2006 conviction also in Snohomish County for Cocaine Possession. SUN is barred from possessing firearms. After he was detained on the warrant, law enforcement officers searched his back pack and found methamphetamine and two firearms: a .45 caliber Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistol and a .25 caliber Beretta semiautomatic pistol.

The case was investigated by the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office, the Skagit County Inter-local Drug Enforcement Unit, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives.
