"POSTAL SUPERVISOR SENTENCED FOR THEFT"
Spokane – Michael C. Ormsby, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, announced that Mark Charles Raley, age 46, of Spokane, was sentenced to 5 years probation for theft of mail matter by a postal service employee. Mr. Raley was also ordered to pay $5,045 in restitution.
On May 25, 2011, the Defendant waived indictment and pled guilty to two counts of theft of mail matter by a postal service employee. While employed as a supervisor at the U.S. Postal Service Spokane Processing and Distribution Center, Mark Raley stole prescription medications from packages which had been mailed by the Spokane Veterans Affairs Medical Center to veterans.

"The American public expects postal service personnel to protect the sanctity of the mail entrusted to them. The vast majority of postal personnel are dedicated public servants whose daily efforts instill trust in America's postal system. Anyone who betrays this trust is thoroughly investigated by OIG Special Agents. This prosecution reinforces the OIG's commitment to safeguarding integrity and accountability in the U.S. Postal Service."
"Ensuring that our nation's veterans receive the medical care they deserve is one of the VA's primary missions. Part of that care includes making sure they receive needed medication" stated Michael Seitler, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, Northwest Field Office. "The defendant in this case interfered with that process and prevented numerous veterans from receiving the medication they desperately needed. The VA OIG is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to ensure that the VA's healthcare mission is effective and that veterans receive the care they deserve."
The investigation was conducted by the Offices of Inspector General for the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This case was prosecuted by George Jacobs, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington.
