Seattle – Today, Michael C. Ormsby, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, announced that Sean Patrick Ganley, age 38, of Federal Way, Washington, was sentenced to two years of probation for illegally importing human steroids into the United States.

The Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations began an investigation when a package containing human growth hormone arrived in New York from Beijing, China in April 2008. It was discovered by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Inspectors working the International Mail Facility at JFK Airport in New York. Further investigation revealed Sean Patrick Ganley, who was a Special Agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement assigned to the Blaine, Washington office, surreptitiously sent three wire transfers to China and ordered the steroids using a false telephone number and fictitious address. Sean Ganley resigned from his position with ICE earlier this year.

Michael C. Ormsby, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, said, “Federal law enforcement officers are held to the highest standards of integrity and honesty. The two year sentence of probation for this felony will vindicate the Federal interest in assuring that he will no longer be a law enforcement officer.”

This investigation was conducted by the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General.

To avoid any conflict of interest with the United States Attorney’s Office in Seattle, this case was prosecuted by Thomas Rice, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington.
