Alexandria Dentist Sentenced to 46 Months for Multi-Million Dollar Health Care Fraud

Dentist Also Ordered to Pay $250,000 Fine

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Tuan Vu, 43, of Arlington, Va., was sentenced today to 46 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for defrauding more than 50 private dental insurance providers of more than $2 million. He was also ordered to pay a $250,000 fine and $2,021,141 in restitution.

            Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and James W. McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Liam O’Grady. 

            Vu pled guilty to health care fraud on Jan. 10, 2012. According to court documents, Vu admitted to committing health care fraud from at least January 2007 to September 2011.  Vu is the owner of Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, PLLC, a dental practice in Alexandria, Va.  During the time of his scheme, Vu repeatedly billed dental insurance providers for services that he did not provide his patients.  As a result of Vu’s offense, more than 50 private insurance providers suffered more than $2 million in actual losses.  Dr. Vu’s conduct also resulted in a substantial loss to the federal government and the Commonwealth of Virginia, including more than $300,000 to the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program and the Virginia Medicaid program.

This case was investigated by the FBI’s Washington Field Office.  Assistant United States Attorney Chad Golder prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
