Washington, D.C., Woman Sentenced to 75 Months for Counterfeit Check Scheme

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 28, 2011

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Astorcia Gilmore, 43, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced today to 75 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for producing and using counterfeit personal checks at businesses throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and David E. Beach, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Liam O’Grady. Gilmore pled guilty on Aug. 8, 2011.

According to court documents, from March 2002 through June 2011, Astorcia Gilmore engaged in a scheme to produce counterfeit checks and use them at local retail stores.  In the first five months of 2011 alone, Gilmore used more than 130 counterfeit checks at local retail stores.  Over the course of her scheme, Gilmore made and used hundreds of counterfeit checks in more than 10 aliases.  Gilmore would steal the names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and other identifying information from other persons, use that information to obtain checkbooks in others’ names, and use those checks to make fraudulent purchases.  Throughout the scheme, Gilmore caused over $120,000 in loss to the more than 50 businesses throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area that she defrauded.

This case was investigated by the United States Secret Service.  Assistant United States Attorney Chad Golder prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
