Former Attorney Arrested for Theft of Client’s Identity
RICHMOND, Va. – Bradley Douglas Wein, 50, of Tucson, Ariz., was arrested today accused of stealing an elderly client’s identity.
Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, made the announcement.
Wein was indicted by a federal grand jury of nine counts of mail fraud and two counts of aggravated identity theft. He faces a maximum penalty of 30 years for each count of mail fraud and a mandatory minimum of two years in prison for each aggravated identity theft count.
According to court documents, Wein was an attorney licensed to practice to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia when he was retained by an elderly client to handle certain legal and financial matters because of her advanced age. Wein misused various credit cards issued in the victim’s name to purchase over $27,000.00 worth of goods and services for his sole personal use and benefit.
The investigation was conducted by the Richmond Area Identity Theft Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Michael C. Moore and Special Assistant United States Attorney Charles A. Quagliato of the Virginia Attorney General’s Office are prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.
Indictments are only charges and not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty.
