Alexandria Woman Pleads Guilty to Defrauding the American Conservative Union
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Diana Carr, 56, of Alexandria, Va., pleaded guilty today embezzling from the American Conservative Union (ACU).
Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and David E. Beach, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by United States District Judge Claude M. Hilton. Carr pled guilty to mail fraud and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years when she is sentenced on Sept. 16, 2011.
In a statement of facts filed with her plea agreement, Carr, a former employee of the American Conservative Union, admitted to diverting funds from the organization and depositing them in personal bank accounts. Carr also admitted to using ACU funds to pay off personal credit card bills and to make personal purchases. Finally, Carr admitted to making false entries in ACU books and records in an effort to conceal her conduct. Carr engaged in the fraud scheme from January 2006 through June 2009.
Pursuant to the plea agreement, Carr has agreed to pay restitution to the victim and to the entry of a forfeiture order.
This case was investigated by the United States Secret Service. Assistant United States Attorney Kosta S. Stojilkovic is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.
