DALLAS MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON,
WITHOUT PAROLE, ON COCAINE CONVICTION

DALLAS — Relvy Esquivel, 41, of Dallas, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, without parole, by U.S. District Judge Sam A. Lindsay, following his guilty plea in June to possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, announced acting U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the Northern District of Texas. Esquivel, a citizen and national of Mexico who is in the U.S. illegally, has been in custody since his arrest in May. After he serves his sentence, he will face deportation proceedings.

According to documents filed in Court, in May 2008, a cooperating individual made a series of consensually monitored phone calls to purchase kilogram quantities of cocaine from an individual who was later identified as Relvy Esquivel. Contact was made and Esquivel agreed to sell five kilograms of cocaine for $17,800 per kilogram, for a total of $89,000. Esquivel said he had the five kilos at his house and for the cooperating individual to come over to purchase it.

A state search warrant was obtained for Esquivel’s house on Beauty Lane in Dallas, but prior to executing the warrant, Esquivel was lured outside of his home. When special agents arrived at the residence and exited their vehicles, wearing full police markings and yelling “police,” Esquivel ran back into the residence. Special agents entered the residence, secured Esquivel and executed the search warrant.

During the search, they recovered approximately four kilograms of cocaine and $115,000 in cash. In addition, they recovered approximately 30 empty kilogram wrappers from the trash and drug ledgers showing numerous quantities of cocaine sales.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Tromblay prosecuted the case.
