AMARILLO WOMAN SENTENCED TO 30 MONTHS
FOR MAILING 78 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA TO HERSELF

United States Attorney Richard B. Roper announced that Tiffany Joy Kelly was sentenced today in Amarillo, Texas, by United States District Judge Mary Lou Robinson to 30 months imprisonment. Kelly pled guilty in October 2006 to one count of illegal use of a communication facility, admitting that she mailed approximately 78 pounds of marijuana to herself. Kelly, age 28, of Amarillo, has been in custody since her arrest in July 2006.

According to court documents, on July 19, 2006, a U.S. Postal Inspector in El Paso, Texas, contacted a U.S. Postal Inspector in Lubbock, Texas, regarding two Express Mail parcels in El Paso that were being sent to Amarillo that were suspected of containing contraband. The parcels were addressed to the Super 8 Motel in Amarillo directed to the attention of Tiffany Joy Kelly at the Super 8 Motel.

A federal search warrant for the parcels was issued and executed and marijuana was found inside the parcels. The parcels were resealed and on July 20, 2006, they were delivered to Tiffany Joy Kelly at the Super 8 Motel. After Kelly accepted delivery of the parcels, she was arrested. She admitted that she had bought 78 pounds of marijuana and mailed it to herself and intended to distribute the marijuana.

U.S. Attorney Roper praised the investigative efforts of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Amarillo Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christy L. Drake of the Amarillo, Texas, United States Attorney’s Office.
