Sioux Falls Man Sentenced for Passing Counterfeit United States Currency

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Sioux Falls man charged with Passing Counterfeit United States Currency was sentenced on May 11, 2012, by Chief US District Judge Karen E. Schreier.  Christipher West, age 39, was sentenced to 12 months plus 1 day of imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release.

West was indicted for Passing Counterfeit United States Currency by a federal grand jury on July 19, 2011. 

On July 14, 2011, at the Wal Mart on South Louise Avenue, West attempted to pass four counterfeit 20-dollar Federal Reserve notes, all bearing the same serial number.  He also attempted to pass 10 counterfeit 10-dollar Federal Reserve notes, all bearing the same serial number.  He used the counterfeit notes in an attempt to purchase merchandise at the store.   West pled guilty to the indictment on February 22, 2012.

This case was investigated by the United States Secret Service.  Assistant US Attorney Kevin Koliner prosecuted the case.

West will be allowed to self-surrender to the U.S. Marshal no later than June 1, 2012.
