Rapid City Man Guilty of Failing to Register as Sex Offender

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Shaun Meyer, age 36, of Rapid City, appeared before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on August 29, 2012, and pled guilty to a charge of Failure to Register or Update as a Sex Offender. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

Between November 2011 and June 2012, Meyer, who is required to register as a sex offender, failed to update his registration with the State of South Dakota. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne A. Venhuizen.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for December 14, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
